The illustration is the Darjeeling chapter heading from the Diary of my Journey around the Earth by Duke Franz Ferdinand (1863-1914), who was murdered in Sarajevo. He had lung problems and in 1892 undertook a two-year voyage round the world on board S.M.S. Empress Elisabeth and in 1895 published his experiences in the Diary of my Journey around the Earth ( Tagebuch meiner Reise um die Erde). The journey lead across the Suez Canal to Ceylon and continued to Bombay, across country further to Calcutta, north through Darjeeling, and Nepal, then to Singapore, Australia, China and Japan. From there he crossed the Pacific on board an ocean liner and continued his journey from Vancouver to New York, and returned over the Atlantic to Europe.
